25 Things Only 1990s Kids Know

 
 

  1.             Eavesdropping on a landline and having the skills to be able to hang up without the incriminating ‘click’

    2.       Assuming plans you made a week ago are still happening

    3.       Prank calling people because there was no call display

    4.       The sweet sound of the dial up tone – can you imagine, not being able to use the phone and the internet at the same time? I know, how DID we survive?

    5.       Endlessly debating if Ross and Rachel were really on a break – jury’s still out

    6.       Just showing up at someone’s house – who does that? We did, all the time

    7.       Getting the last copy of the new release at the video store, THE LAST ONE!

    8.       Where you were when the OJ verdict was released – (in dance class, they read the verdict over the intercom at school…)

    9.       Zack, Slater or Screech? / Kelly, Jessie or Lisa?

    10.   Applying for a job in person

    11.   Slap Bracelet Band Ban

    12.   Dylan, Brandon or David? / Kelly, Brenda or Donna?

    13.   Doing the Macarena

    14.   Getting excited every time Carlton Banks walked in the room and the first few bars of Tom Jones cued up on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air

    15.   Timing TV breaks perfectly with commercials and rushing back to not miss anything – practice made perfect

    16.   Your heart breaking when Jordan revealed his song wasn’t about Angela in My So-called Life

    17.   The ability to memorize over half a dozen phone numbers

    18.   Walking right up to airport gates, even if you weren’t flying

    19.   Whitney’s “I Will Always Love You” or Celine’s “My Heart Will Go On”? C’mon, you know you like one more than the other…

    20.   Never being able to get Anthony Hopkins’ delivery of the “Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti” scene in The Silence of The Lambs out of your head – there are some things you just can’t unsee

    21.   Use a telephone book – how else could you prank call your crush?

    22.   Use a payphone – how much are they now?

    23.   Going to a library to check you email

    24.   Running around unsupervised – the street lights coming on were your sign to start heading home

    25.   Being unreachable – a lost art.

By the end of high school I had mastered my Mum’s signature hands down. Dad’s not so much, too scribbly. The reason to perfect such a skill you ask? Actually, no one is probably asking that, we all did it and we all know why - the ever-coveted parent’s note to miss class. If you had a doctor’s appointment, family obligation, or say an orthodontic appointment with Dr. Greene aka the ONLY ORTHODONTIST in our suburban city - man that guy must have cleaned up and retired well – if you had braces in K-town in the 1990s, you got them c/o Dr. Greene. Parental ghosting

Everyone has been ghosted at some point in their modern-day life. Whether it be a friend who fell off the earth, that boy that’s “just not that into you”, or the guy that promised to buy your car online but never showed. But what about being ghosted by your parents? This was very common during our childhood summers. As soon as the sun rose, young people slowly started to surface. We were fed, then tenderly kicked out of the house with the complete expectation that we would be home in time for supper. In fact, if we came home before supper, we were asked if we were ok, or if someone bit us, or the infamous “what are you doing home? “We had no clip-on water bottles, no lunch box with cute heart shaped sandwiches or lunchables, no sweater, no snacks, no money, sometimes even no shoes – and definitely no cell phone. Cursing Cursive

When Grace and I were growing up, we had to learn the basics like how to read, do arithmetic (that’s math young people), understand and speak a language (in our case this was french and english with solid phonetics), and to write.  And when I mean write – I mean write in cursive. That’s where your letters are all connected, flow like liquid gold, and have gorgeous curves throughout the capital and lower case letters. When you’re fluent in cursive writing, it’s like a beautiful dance between écriture and personality that seamlessly come together. We used to practice our absolute best cursive writing when we were in elementary school and had to write book reports – then into high school when we wrote essays. No kids, there were not computers in most homes yet - or if there were, your parents were very very well off. We didn’t get our first home computer until I was 19. I know, shocking right?
